Departmental News Fall 2014

Author: Rebecca Hicks

It has been a busy year for the department. We are especially grateful to all the donors who have financed efforts here on campus to enable us to be leaders in science. We are also proud of the accomplishments of our staff and faculty in furthering this mission.

The William K. Warren Foundation made a most generous $3.5 million gift that will endow the new Warren Family Research Center for Drug Discovery and Development when combined with a previous gift of $6.5 million. The center will support research to create the Notre Dame Chemical Compound Collection and promote evaluation of new therapeutics with the aim of bringing new drugs to the marketplace.

Construction crews have broken ground on the new Molecular Sciences and Engineering Building. This facility will house faculty from both Chemistry and Biochemistry and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and will be located in a portion of what was previously the library parking lot.. This state-of-the-art, 200,000 sq ft building will provide laboratory and common space. The building is expected to be completed in the fall of 2016.

Congratulations to Deb Bennett, our Administrative Assistant for Graduate Studies, who received the 2014 Graduate Administrative Staff Member Award from the Graduate School. Deb serves an indispensable role in managing the growing graduate program, and we are very fortunate to have her in the department.

Departmental research expenditures for 2012 were released by the National Science Foundation. These data show that the department ranks 14th in total and 15th in federal expenditures nationally. Over 600 institutions were listed in the report; however, as US News and World Report lists ~200 chemistry graduate programs, that puts ND in the top 7.5%.

We now have both polo style shirts and fleece jackets in navy blue and hunter green with the department logo on them for purchase. The shirts are $20 and jackets are $35 (plus shipping costs). If you would like to show your support of ND Chemistry and Biochemistry by sporting these nice garments, please send a note to Cheryl Copley. Proceeds from the shirts and jackets help support the activities of the ACS student affiliates chapter.

We wish to recognize and express our appreciation to Mrs. Barbara O’Connor and her family for their generous $100,000 endowment of the department’s annual biochemistry retreat. This annual retreat commenced in 1996, and we are very grateful for this gift that will ensure that it continues for years to come.
